The application of intelligent transport systems (ITS) is a challenge for the future. The deployment needs a well defined ITS strategy. The actual deployment of ITS systems consists of collective traffic control systems and some individual information systems in experimental phase. The cornerstones of the future applications are the collective traffic control systems, the different information systems, and the electronic fee collection, based on an open system architecture. Synergy effects can be expected in the future in establishing a "Public/Private Partnership" in the area of overlapping interests of the public and private spheres.
