This paper describes how digital moving image transmission techniques can be effectively used in the field of rail and road transportation. Moving image compression techniques, low power SS (radio wave) wireless transmission devices and optical wireless transmission devices are described. The radio wave system is susceptible to rain while the optical system is susceptible to fog, so a combination of both systems is preferred. Applications of image transmission include unmanned train CCTV equipment in new transportation systems, platform monitoring, level crossing monitoring, rail passenger information, and traffic flow monitoring/control.
