This report describes Road Accidents in the Private Accident Registration System (VIPORS) as a registration system and sets out the organisation of the database. The administration of the system quality, its data, and the comprehensive and representative value are reported on the basis of separate reports. The unique VIPORS quality is that it registers both injury and accident data. The individual victims can be approached at a later date for any supplementary accident information. The annual data over 1995 show that the number of road accident victims increased slightly compared to 1994. At almost 50%, cyclists represent the main group of road accident victims in the Netherlands. In this group, emphasis is placed on single accidents. The severity of accidents in VIPORS is mainly typified by the proportion of hospital admissions (14%) and the number of road accident victims who died in hospital (0.3%). The most frequently occurring injuries are wounds and contusions. The report illustrates the added VIPORS value using: (1) the bicycle victim category; and (2) the `whiplash' subject. The VIPORS data are used to correct the representativeness and comprehensiveness of the Road Accident Registration (VOR) data. See also C 5786 (IRRD 882419) and C 6610 (IRRD 886397).
