Many traffic technology systems have the explicit or implicit purpose of contributing to congestion reduction, either for the individual vehicle or across a road network. This article explores what the next decade holds for jam-busting technology. The challenges posed by a greater deployment of intelligent transport systems (ITS) are discussed, along with the problem of secondary congestion caused by diverted traffic. The issue of what to do with large amounts of data, regarding the behaviour of vehicles on our roads, leads to a discussion of standardisation. For the covering abstract see ITRD E139966.
