Samenvatting

This paper concerns the increasing number of traffic accidents involving elderly people in Japan. The main types of driving accident were collision in passing and collision when turning right across traffic. Most accidents involving senior citizens were those where they were pedestrians: however, the number of vehicle drivers involved was now higher than cyclists. Social and traffic regulations have been changed to provide safer facilities for pedestrians and to improve road conditions to make driving an easier process. Drivers over 75 years have to undergo a traffic safety course including simulated driving performance and visual tests. Four tests of driving operation involving reaction tests and accuracy skills are described. Personality tests are recommended by the author to determine drivers more likely to have an accident.
