Samenvatting

With a high number of schools in the town and with a large number of pupils attending these schools, the term time traffic patterns in Berkhamsted are significantly worse than during school holidays. This contrast is far more marked than in other towns in Hertfordshire. This challenge to the overall success of the project has been turned into an opportunity to target a particular sector of the travelling public. Our aims are to improve road safety, particularly for vulnerable users, i.e. the young, pedestrians and cyclists and modify travel habits to help reduce traffic levels and, hence, improve the local environment. The paper describes the methods to be used to achieve these aims. Berkhamsted is one of several medium size towns in the county of Hertfordshire. It has a high rate of car ownership being one of the more affluent towns in the county. There is a school population of 4,000, which contributes to the travel problems in the town with a total population of 16,000. (A)
