Samenvatting

This article outlines the rehabilitation and repair carried out on a historic viaduct in the USA. The reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridgewas built on a horizontal curve in a parkland setting. Serious deterioration of the concrete made repair necessary, with the aim of all restorationwork being done in a way that would maintain and preserve the character and fabric of the original design. Deck rehabilitation included extensive removal of material and it was cost-effective to replace some portions completely with new reinforced concrete slab. Less badly damaged areas were repaired by cleaning and patching. New watertight joints were installed and the drainage system rehabilitated to discharge run-off water adequately. Selective repair was also carried out on the superstructure, while spallingon the piers and other substructure was mended with anchored reinforced concrete repair methods. End spans were replaced with reinforced concrete pavement supported on fill, with a landscaped sloped embankment. Deteriorated concrete light standards were reproduced, with neoclassical style luminaries.
