The policy of the Dutch government is aimed at shifting (the growth of) road transport to short sea shipping. Short sea shipping is characterized by the large number of parties involved by the execution of a transport transaction and consequently a large number of information flows with accompany a transport transaction. This paper discusses the possibilities for improving the competitive position of short sea shipping by applying telematics. It describes whether telematics can be supplied, and if so, in which manner and between which parties. In addition, the paper investigates whether it is desirable and feasible to start a pilot project in which telematics will be used. (A)
