Samenvatting

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) use advanced and emerging technologies in such fields as information processing, communications, control, and electronics and apply them to surface transportation needs. Since ITS is primarily a research program, key findings obtained are considered a valid basis for reporting on what has been achieved. Accordingly, this paper provides answers to the question "What have we learned on the ITS program"? Some of the key findings are summarized in the following program areas: Advanced Traffic Management Systems, Advanced Traveller Information Systems, Commercial Vehicle Operations, Advanced Collision avoidance Systems, Automated Highway System, Advanced Public Transportation Systems, and Advanced Rural Transportation Systems. Cross-cutting findings are also given as are findings on emerging technologies, the National ITS Architecture, standards, and mainstreaming. (A)
