This publication sets out the United Kingdom government policy for reducing accidents caused by speeding. Statistics are provided to show the relationship between speed, accidents and casualties. The propability of serious injury to car occupants also increases with impact speed. The strategies currently being used to prevent speeding are outlined briefly. These include: a) new detection methods, such as speed cameras; b) higher penalties; c) publicity campaigns to change peoples attitudes towards speeding; d) traffic calming measures; e) use of speed limiters; and f) setting the appropriate speed limit.
