Samenvatting

Knowledge-based systems (KBS) are capable of representing all forms of knowledge: declarative, procedural and heuristic. However, emphasis to date has been focused on simulating the design heuristics (shallow knowledge) of human experts. This paper describes an innovative modelling technique that couples both deep and shallow knowledge in problem-solving algorithms to technically integrate the conceptual and detailed design phases for flexible, rigid and interlocking-segmental pavements. Design systems produced by the modelling approach can assist both novice and senior designers; and teachers in their presentation of undergraduate courses. (A)
