Samenvatting

In this study the effects of profiled markings on lane discipline of drivers in the right motorway traffic lane are investigated. The results are presented of behavioural observations in the after period at one location (the A28 motorway), with a dry and wet road surface, both in daytime and nighttime conditions. The results are compared with the lane keeping behaviour at conventional road markings. At night, in wet road conditions the profiled road markers are less often exceeded than conventional road markers. Profiled road markers cause an increase in driving speed of passenger cars during wet road conditions. In daylight, the speed of free driving passenger cars increases by 4.1 km/h, while at night 4.1 km/h, while at night the speed increases by 4.7 km/h. It is concluded that: (1) the improved visibility of profiled road markers at night and on wet roads contributes to a decrease in the number of lane exceedances; and (2) that the improved visibility induces drivers to drive at higher speed.
