Samenvatting

The behaviour of the bituminous concrete mix containing a binder additive in the form of recycled shredded waste plastic bags was studied. The additive was added to the 80/100-penetration grade bitumen and the basic tests like penetration, ductility and softening point were carried out and the properties of the modified binder were studied. The laboratory tests revealed that penetration and ductility values decreased as the percentage content of the plastic modifier increased, however softening point increased with the percentage addition of the plastic modifier. Marshall stability tests were carried out to determine the optimum bitumen content (OBC) and optimum modifier content (OMC) of the bituminous concrete mix. Laboratory fatigue tests on bituminous concrete and plastic modified bituminous concrete conducted at 25 degrees C, 30 degrees C and 35 degrees C under constant stress mode indicated that the fatigue life of the plastic modified bituminous concrete is significantly higher than that of the plain bituminous concrete.
