This report aims to clarify the role of sustainability issues in European cities and the role that is given to land use and transport planning to achieve these sustainability goals. The report is the result of work executed within task 2.1 of the Transplus project. The Transplus project is part of the 'City of Tomorrow' program of the fifth research framework of the European Commission. The project has chosen for a case study approach. The report includes therefore many cases of land use and transport planning in European cities. Two regional planning strategies are identified : the monocentric and the polycentric planning strategy. Each strategy is elaborated using examples of policies and actions that are applied in European cities. The information is based on extensive case studies for each of the 23 cities included in the Transplus project. For each of the case studies an in-depth research paper is available at the project website (www.transplus.net).
