While in the past urban regions were defined in terms of 'stadsgewest', monocentric urban form and radial infrastructure networks this is increasingly questioned. It is argued that during the last decade the urban structure has fundamentally been changing. Most often the changing urban structure is described in terms of networks, polycentrism, dispersion whereas the explanation is found in the network economy and the postmodern lifestyle. This paper aims to present a theoretical framework that is to be used to investigate these relatively new urban phenomena. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see ITRD E206647.
