This paper presents an overview of using land use planning processes and policy for addressing potential conflicts between freight operations and urban development. Public policies in relation to freight typically address logistics improvements, competition, influencing modal balance, improving vehicle efficiencies, transport networks and nodes. In response to community concerns the Western Australian Government requested the Department for Planning and Infrastructure to develop a land use policy to guide urban development along the primary freight infrastructure, including freight railways, for reducing the conflict between the need for the operation of freight infrastructure and its negative impacts on the immediately surrounding community.
