Samenvatting

The Green's Creek Bridge (Culvert) is located on R.R. 174, 0.75 km east of Montreal Road interchange, in the city of Ottawa. R.R. 174 is one of the City of Ottawa's main highways carrying six (6) lanes of traffic and provides a significant link in the Regional Transportation network with an AADT of 60,000. The bridge was originally built in 1958 and consists of four adjacent SPCSP, each 4.55 metres in diameter. Regular maintenance inspections showed severe rusting from leakage through the bolt holes and cracking of plates for most parts of the east culvert. Further detailed investigation showed that without intervention and remedial measures, it was foreseeable that the structure would continue to deteriorate at an accelerated rate and would, eventually cease to perform its intended function of supporting the road fill of over 4 meters and carrying the flow of Green Creek. Therefore remedial measures were mandatory. The rehabilitation plan was based on the assumption that no interruptions to traffic flow could be considered, and on the need to maintaining the 100 year flood capacity of the culvert after construction with no reduction in overall hydraulic characteristics. The work could be done during the winter months when Contractors were not as busy and to comply with the Ministry of Environment regulations, which do not allow in water work from March to July. Many potentially viable liners repair methods were considered which satisfied to a greater or lesser degree the majority of the requirements. After careful consideration of all the parameters, the method of wet shotcrete was chosen as it could be completed within a short period of time, it could be done during the winter months with proper protection, cost less due to lack of form work, and possibility of use of high strength concrete. This paper will discuss in detail the design of the shotcrete repairs; the construction experience and the lessons learned and provide recommendations for similar design and construction in the future.
