A simple model incorporating the contribution of base resistanceto the lateral response of rigid piers is reviewed. The general applicability of the model and the importance of including base resistance are investigated through a parametric study and a comparison between predicted and measured responses of 16 load tests reported in the literature. The test piers were constructed in sand, clay, and layered soil profiles. In general, it is shown that the model incorporated in the software ltbase tends to underestimate the measured field capacity at pier rotations of 1 and 2 degrees by about 10% on the average, with a standard deviation of 18%.
