The Laurier Bridge is an important landmark in downtown Ottawa with prominent steel arches spanning over the Rideau Canal. The arches and the west part of the structure were built in 1900 and modified in 1927. The east structure, consisting of seven concrete T-beam spans, was built in 1943 to span over railway tracks. The proposed 20 million dollar project includes the reconstruction of the 100 year old structure carrying four lanes of traffic, approximately 500 meters of approach roadways and a major intersection. Modification of parkways under the bridge, promenades along the Canal and connecting ramps is also included. The structure is proposed to be widened by about fifty percent, with the widening dedicated for the benefit of pedestrians and cyclists and for safety improvements. This project is an example of various levels of government working together with stakeholders to develop solutions that enhance the local urban environment, improve the safety of users and preserve heritage with a goal of ensuring that the structure continues to provide service well into the 21st century. An Environmental Assessment Study has been completed in conformance with federal and provincial requirements. Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2001. During the 27 month construction period, two lanes of traffic will be maintained on the bridge and on parkways below the bridge and canal operations will continue through summer and winter.
