Samenvatting
The purpose of this article is to show how the lighting engineer can meet the three essential requirements for public lighting, which are: 1. Ensure automobile and pedestrian safety; 2. Provide a comfortable ambient illumination without excessive expenditures; 3. Be integrated in the environment. After a brief review of some definitions, the quality criteria for a public lighting system are examined. The article ends with an outline of a schedule desirable for maintenance operations.
