The Leeds Guided Busway is unique. Unlike other guided bus systems in Germany and Australia, discrete lengths of guideway are constructed only on the approaches to junctions where there is recurrent congestion. Elsewhere along the route, buses run freely with other road traffic or in bus-only lanes. Initial results, in terms of reduced bus journey times, improved reliability and increased patronage, are impressive. The scheme may offer a cost-effective solution to some transport problems found in developing countries.
