This paper provides a general overview of Australian legislation as it applies to control and use of bicycles, a survey of bicycle enforcement strategies employed by Australian police forces, details of the Victorian experience in bicycle law enforcement and a brief discussion on the police role in bicycle safety programs. It is also observed that police have a role in bicycle safety programs and that continuation of this form of road user education is vital to both the community and police departments throughout Australia. The paper concludes that appropriate legislation change and effective enforcement programs are low cost initiatives that have the potential to develop an increased awareness to bicycle safety in this country.
