Samenvatting

This report reviews the criteria for the selection of porous asphalt. The advantages and disadvantages of porous asphalt in comparison to traditional asphalt are also discussed, and a cost benefit analysis conducted. Advantages include: a) effects upon accident rate and driver behaviour; b) improved driver comfort; and c) decreased traffic noise. Disadvantages include increased whole life costs. The design, construction specifications are presented and discussed, as are methods for repair and maintenance. Performance is also discussed, as are production costs. Capital costs are dependent upon local circumstances and the characteristics of the materials used in construction. However, most countries require the use of modified bitumen, and this costs from 30-100% more than classic asphalt mixes. A large bibliography is provided in French, English, German, Spanish, and Italian references. The French title of this report is: Les enrobés drainants.
