Samenvatting

This article contrasts the different approaches adopted in Europe as opposed to the United States with respect to transport policy and, in particular, public transport provision. While there are a number of geographical and economic reasons why one would anticipate a differing approach to policy in Europe vis-à-vis the United States, there is also often a different philosophical attitude in many European countries. The implications of these differences are considered in terms of the nature of the various transport systems that have emerged and their implications for users and those more generally affected by transport.
