For the last ten years, many companies worldwide have claimed to provide a cellphone probe technology that delivers real-time traffic information on the roads. However only a few of these vendors were really examined at controlled independent evaluations and even these few have not been validated as providing a reasonable traffic data. Furthermore, traditional systems such as inductive loops and cameras are still considered as a standard in the industry, although these technologies have their own significant limitations that should be taking into consideration. This paper presents theperformance and limitations of the cellphone probe systems in comparison to other technologies, based on the implementation of these systems in several countries and to reveal some lessons learned, based on this wide experience.
