A life cycle analysis shows that if cars last longer than at the moment the total carbondioxide emissions will be reduced. This will also be the case in the future unless annual fuel efficiency of new cars will be improved much more than in the past. Very likely reducing the age of the existing car fleet will result in lower emissions of some of the components (hydrogen oxide, carbon monoxide) on a life cycle basis. Scrapping cars without a catalytic convertor seems to be cost ineffective compared to fitting three way catalytic converters on existing cars. (A)
