Calgary's new traffic lights are proving that you can get more for less, with the right technology on your side. On March 19, 2003, The City of Calgary, ROADS began retrofitting all of The City's existing green, red and pedestrian incandescent traffic signal displays with new energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Once complete, the project will result in an 80 percent reduction in the energy costs associated with incandescent traffic signal operations and will reduce equivalent CO2 emissions by 8,660 tonnes a year. When all intersections have been retrofitted, the project will reduce electricity use by approximately 8 million kWh, generating savings of $670,000 a year. The new traffic lights are also brighter and more durable. This project was submitted as an entry for the Transportation Association of Canada's Environmental Achievement Award.
