This experiment investigated the effects of pulsing lights, which gave the illusion of movement, on drivers' perception of of motion and vehicle speed when passing roadworks. 40 drivers each made 15 passes through a roadworks area in the virtual world of of a driving simulator. The drivers were subjected to various combinations of speed and colour of light. Overall, backward moving lights caused drivers to reduce their speed, forward moving lights caused drivers to increase their speed, stationary lights had no effect and green lights were the most effective.
