Samenvatting

PACTS and RoSPA have produced a joint briefing in support of a Bill to move to Single/Double Summer Time (SDST) and to create longer evenings and save lives. The Lighter Evenings bill, a 10-minute rule bill tabled by Nigel Beard MP (Lab, Bexleyheath and Crayford), will be debated on Tuesday 8th June 2004. The briefing argues: "This would create lighter evenings all year round and result in fewer people being killed and injured in road accidents and also bring significant environmental, economic and health benefits, the latter being particularly relevant to the current debate about obesity and public health". Research suggests a switch to SDST (the same as Central European Time) could prevent up to 450 killed and seriously-injured road casualties every year, including 104-108 fewer deaths.
