This paper will concentrate on the human aspects of lighting and safety. To develop this topic further, initial research will be made in to the subject of light and age, concentrating on the aging eye. The second part of this study then focuses on perceptions of safety, specifically on psychological theories of perception. Using the information gained from introductory research, the direction will turn towards the analysis of light and safety. The third section will specifically look at park areas currently undergoing urban development, discussing lighting safety, area and users. The final section of this paper will focus on current urban development initiatives, dealing with lighting and safety, while considering previous government statistics. The purpose of this study is to conclude whether a concise lighting design can impact on people’s safety, whether a specific formula of urban development and lighting can be defined to create safer environment. The analysis will concentrate on human perception of safety, ensuring a false sense of security is not the outcome, aiming to provide answers as to which criteria equates to a safer environment in terms of lighting design.
