Samenvatting

The aim of the study is to develop the method used by traffic accident boards when the accidents are described and analyzed. The report forms a foundation for methodological handling by studying first the description methods of case studies in general from the viewpoint of accident theories and by reviewing the history of traffic accident case studies. The handling method of the finnish accident boards showed features of several accident theories, but its fundamental structure is connected to the causal chain theory. It is typical of this mode of thinking that it leads to several conclusions based on estimations, which are dependent on the estimator. The report also hinted that these observations are the more doubtful the larger the share of estimate and the smaller of possible measurement. Special attention has been paid to this fact in model development. In the first part conclusions are drawn with the aid of a logical system on the basis of measurement results from which a total of seven different accident factors can be excluded from the study. The analysis is based on technical reconstruction of the case and resembles the analysis method used in the danish fyn-investigation. In the second part the information obtained and needed by the driver is analyzed based on information obtained in an interview.
