This paper examines the degree in which professional drivers accept a voluntary lateral support system. This intelligent transport system gives an audible warning to the driver to correct his course in case of unintentional line crossing. The driver acceptance study was part of a field operational test initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Transport involving truck drivers and bus drivers. The main objective of the lateral support system is to enhance traffic safety. The study discussed here provides an overview of the effects of the lateral support system as experienced by the drivers who had the system on-board half a year. The focus of this paper is on safety effects including the risk of unsafe behaviour evoked by an increased safety feeling. For the covering abstract see ITRD E126595.
