During 2007 the Minister of Transport requested that Land Transport New Zealand conduct a review of recent developments in international knowledge about measures to counter driver fatigue, with a focus on identifying measures that are successful, unsuccessful and are workable in New Zealand in the future. The National Road Safety Council also requested a similar review with the aim of profiling best practice suitable for the New Zealand context. A Land Transport NZ and Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) project team identified the 2001 report by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), entitled Driver Fatigue and Road Accidents: A Literature Review and Position Paper as a baseline review. As a result, this review covers developments since 2000 (the final year covered in the RoSPA review), and is designed to explore the literature from the perspective of measures against driver fatigue/fatigued driving.
