Presenting real-time traffic information by means of Dynamic Route Information Panels (DRIPs) is expected to contribute to a better utilization of the existing road infrastructure. The needs and utilization of traffic information on DRIPs depends on user groups and travel motives. Little knowledge exists concerning the effect of distinct text strategies on DRIPs. Results of several stated preference studies, surveys of road users, experiments, travel simulator studies and various modelling studies often show differences and sometimes even contradictories with respect to needs and information compliance behaviour of road users. This literature review reveales also qualitative and quantitative insight insight into the factors that exert influence on information interpretation and behavioural changes in reply to providing distinct types of real-time travel information.
