A second interim report on a literature review of variable traffic signs is presented. The possibilities of and experiences with variable traffic signs and the use of variable panels are discussed. The study is mainly related to directing traffic flows in a relatively small road network (level ii). examples of 8 systems, used in different countries, are selected for further research. Aspects of this selection were: geographical situation, aim and criteria for installation, detection, transmission, control centre and strategy, criteria for use, visualisation, results and behaviour of drivers, costs and benefits, and special experiences and further research.
