At the Tenth (1980) ARRB Conference, a half-day special session on Local Street Traffic and Safety was held. This report records the papers which were presented at the session, the formal discussion and a number of supplementary papers. The papers cover the following themes: traffic safety in the minor street system; road safety and children; vehicle speeds in minor streets;design of streets based on pedestrian exposure; resident perceptions of safety and an alternative to conventional local network planning; principles for safety urban streets; arterial road traffic management strategies; traffic planning procedures, and extent of community input. The discussion summary draws attention to the evidence given by the papers of a vital interest in solving problems created by the inherent conflict between traffic movement and amenity (including safety).
