A discussion of the possible relevance to Australia of European local street traffic management practice centres on three aspects: slower-speed zones, traffic management techniques, and monitoring and evaluation. In each of these areas, the paper discusses some examples of European activity and makes observations on their implications for Australian practice. It concludes, among other things, that the European 30 km/h zone is a better model for Australia than is the woonerf, and that raised paving and flat-topped humps potentially have useful application under Australian conditions. Current European efforts to monitor and evaluate local traffic management highlight an area needing attention in Australia. (A)
