Samenvatting

This paper describes the activities of Centro in the West Midlands in opening up access to existing public transport information services and in publicising specialised services such as `Ring and Ride'. Existing methods of communication are considered and their efficiency in reaching the disabled assessed. Special arrangements for communicating with the disabled and any drawbacks are described. Informal networks are found to be most useful in particular via health service personnel and social service workers. For services designed particularly for the handicapped Centro has a procedure which is followed when services are introduced. Addressing groups of people, often with the use of a bus, is found to be particularly useful in building confidence. Centro also recommend the production of a comprehensive area guide bringing together all information relevant to the disabled.
