The Regional Transportation Authority is the second largest transit agency in the United States. Covering a total area of over 3,700 square miles, it consists of six counties that surround the City of Chicago in north-eastern Illinois. The Chicago Transit Authority, the actual operation of transit services primarily in the City of Chicago area, serves approximately one million bus riders per day within the County of Cook. Chicago has been recognised as the third among the nation's 50 most congested urban regions resulting in long travel times, increased travel delays, wasted fuel, and high operating costs. In an effort to relieve that congestion, the RTA, in conjunction with its stakeholders, is implementing the Regional Transit Signal Priority Integration Plan, that will provide a comprehensive framework for implementation of integrated transit signal priority systems along major corridors. A crucial element of the RTA's Regional Transit Signal Priority Integration Plan is a Location Study that involves the investigation of potential transit routes and roadway corridors for priority treatment. This paper presents results of the Location Study with a focus on the Chicago area.
