Samenvatting

The Long-range Programme for Road Safety 1996-2000, which was presented to the Dutch Lower Chamber on 21 May 1996, sets the course for the road safety implementation programme. At that time the pledge was also made to publish annual progress reports. This is the first progress report: The Long-range Programme for Road Safety 1997-2001. The long-range programme is the result of the joint effort of all road safety partners. This interactive approach will be continued. In preparation for the discussion with the Dutch Lower Chamber, seperate consultations were held regarding the entire programme with many of the participating partners regarding the specification of their own role and responsibilities vis-à-vis combatting road unsafety. In addition, the progress of the established agreements was given an express place on the agenda and whenever possible new agreements were establised. This progress report deals with the objectives of the road safety policy and examines the most important developments. (A)
