Samenvatting

A field study has been carried out to investigate the stresses acting on a contiguous bored pile retaining wall propped beneath the carriageway and embedded in London Clay, which was constructed in 1975. Instrumentation was installed in front of and behind the wall and insitu testing carried out to establish the ground and water pressures in the vicinity of the structure. The lateral stresses acting on the wall were determined from push-in spade cells, from Camkometer and Marchetti dilatometer testing, and from laboratory measurements of soil capillary pressure. An assessment of the wall stability is given and the maximum bending moments and prop forces with results from limit equilibrium calculations and finite element analyses.
