Samenvatting

This paper discusses the influence of high temperature on drivers with regard to their loss of body fluids and electrolytes during driving, decreasing thus traffic safety. Driving risks due to health impairment caused by the excessive heat and the related conditions can be prevented by proper behaviour which involves regular substitution of the loss of fluid, a controlled meal regime and wisely selected clothes. It can be argued that mineral water is an ideal substitute for the loss of body fluids due to sweating and for the subsequent loss of electrolytes. Drivers are therefore recommended to take mineral water when driving in summer months.
