Samenvatting

This article describes the manufacturing process and characteristics of low-energy asphalts (LEAs). Temperature reduction in the production of half-warm-mix asphalt can be fifty per cent: this creates cost savings as well as environmental benefits. In LEA manufacturing the granular skeleton is partially dried, reducing the energy needed to remove water: the residual water causes foaming of the bitumen which improves its workability. LEA can be produced in any type of plant using sequential coating methods. Laboratory studies and on-site testing have been carried out to evaluate performance and verify the reproducibility of the process. On-site application showed cleanness of application with reduced use of solvents. Further work needs to be done to improve reproducibility.
