Samenvatting

All but 4 of 29 patients referred for unexplained loss of vision combined heavy drinking and heavy smoking. ''The abuse of ethyl alcohol may certainly cause visual problems partly by a disturbance of the conduction nerve fibers, partly by a disturbance of the conduction nerve fibres, partly through an effect on the retina itself. Though an indirect effect via vitamin B and A deficiency will often be a major component, direct toxic effects may also contribute to the discase." The author's observations have obvious implications for the driving capability of heavy drinkers.
