The practicability and the influence of countermeasures to reduce the use of the private car greatly depend on the acceptance of the measures by the target group. At the Dutch Traffic Research Centre a new research method has been developed by which "social acceptance" elasticity can be measured. This information can be very useful for target group selection and for selection as well as evaluation of the strategies for changing attitudes and behaviour. The theoretical background of the method, its principles and its possible applications are discussed.
