Samenvatting

Recently there has been an increased interest in the application of macroscopic models for the description of developments in traffic safety. A discussion was started on the causes of the sudden decrease in the number of fatal and injury accidents after 1974. Before that time these numbers had increased steadily over the years. Two mathematical curves are suggested and from this is estimated a total of 1080 fatal accidents in 1990 for the Netherlands. An opponent remark is presented by E.Brühning.
