The Regional Government of Madrid in conjunction with the Consortium of Transport of Madrid has carried out a Regional Transport Strategy to identify the scale and nature of main transport problems, to establish medium and long term objectives and issues and to define effective transport strategies and packages of measures for the next 8 years, with the horizon of the year 2001. The Regional Transport Strategy for the year 2001, on integrated transport plan for the metropolitan area of Madrid, was to be developed in the context of a broader spatial and economic vision; the efficiency of the region and the quality of life of their inhabitants depends on how the transport system meets mobility needs. The regional land use planning policy, based in a decentralization of the activity in the metropolitan area, the combined public transport strategy proposed involving infrastructure improvements, bus priorities and fare policies, and its practicability, including financial feasibility, is described.
