Samenvatting

Created in 1985, Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM) has considered the integration of different modes of public transport has its highest priority. CRTM acts as a regulatory and coordinating body for public transport operation in the Madrid region of Spain. The Madrid public transport system is based on two urban transport modes (metro and city bus services) and two metropolitan transport modes (suburban rail services and suburban buses. These are operated, respectively, by Metro de Madrid, EMT, Cercan_as-Renfe, and private companies. Recent developments in the metro and light rail are described. These include increases in metro lines, new intermediate metro stations and the construction of 35km of light rail. Improvements to the urban bus system include the protection of bus lanes by specially designed barriers and a new vehicle scheduling and control system. A new tunnel crossing the centre of Madrid will be constructed for the suburban rail network. CRTM is constructing large intermodal centres and is implementing a common Integrated Management System to monitor all the new interchanges. (Author/publisher).
