Samenvatting

This paper was presented at the `Innovative Bridge Projects, 1993-96' session. The reconstruction of the Canadian National (C.N.) Rail Mainline Overpass across Main Street formed part of the City of Winnipeg's Main Street and Norwood Bridges Project. The project, designed to eliminate vehicular traffic congestion, substandard roadside safety, and structural deficiencies, upgrades a primary arterial link between the Central Business District and the developing communities of St. Vital and St. Boniface in the City of Winnipeg. The entire project includes the construction of five bridges, a pump station, numerous underground pipe systems and the associated roadworks. Accommodation of existing rail and road traffic throughout the construction period was one of the primary design requirements. Other design issues include the requirement for an aesthetically pleasing structure, accommodation for a future transit corridor, limiting site geometrics, and potential riverbank instability. (A)
