Samenvatting

During the 1980's, transport systems in French towns underwent changes, including the construction of underground trains, tramways, ring roads, pedestrian-only areas, out of town shopping centres, and trade centres. In this paper, changes in mobility by type of transport, changes in transport type, and changes in journey times, by type of transport are discussed. The author concludes with the prediction of further decline in use of two wheeled transport, bicycles, motorcycles, and that use of state of the art technology in public transport will be needed to keep public transport viable compared to increasingly, the individual's preference for the private car.
